Your Soul, O King, Before God
Your Soul, O King, Before God, Is Equal To That Of The Indio.
Bartolome de las Casas
This 15th century line from a letter to the King of Spain was at the time a most daring defense of the rights of the natives. The dignity of man has been a central teaching of Christ. It must be preached in season and out of season. All men are indeed created equal. Whether kings or paupers – all stand equal before God. How is my own personal human rights rating? It is not just national leaders who will be judged but also I. There are natives in my province. Do I look to them as equals? What can I do as a private citizen to remedy the neglect of their rights?
Lord, there are many issues that should awaken me to action not just prayer. The treatment of employees, the question of a family living wage, the rights to security in times of emergency, sickness and old age. Help me to give my share in poverty alleviation.
